President William Ruto has launched works to upgrade the Rabuor-Chiga road in Kisumu County as his administration expands road infrastructure investment across the region.
Ruto flagged off machinery for the 12-kilometre project on Monday, September 14, with construction expected to be completed within 18 months. Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabir said residents had pursued the road project for 22 years before construction finally began.
The Chiga-Rabuor road project is valued at about Sh1.10 billion, according to an earlier government project update. It forms part of several road developments currently underway across Kisumu County.
Ruto said Sh23 billion had been allocated to road projects in Kisumu, with nine new roads already under construction. He also announced that the Kibos-Nyamongo road would be upgraded to bitumen standards.
The President said improved road infrastructure would make it easier for residents to access markets and essential services while supporting the movement of people and goods.
Ruto also said his administration had paid close to Sh250 billion to contractors working on stalled road projects across the country, allowing construction to resume after previous delays caused by unpaid bills.
Kisumu is currently seeing significant investment in transport infrastructure. The Mamboleo-Miwani-Chemelil-Muhoroni-Kipsitet corridor alone comprises three road contracts valued at more than Sh15.8 billion, while other projects include interchanges and upgrades to urban and rural roads.
The Rabuor-Chiga launch forms part of Ruto's development tour of Nyanza, which includes inspections and commissioning of road, water, market, housing and other infrastructure projects across Kisumu, Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay counties.
